This is a "Medicine Tree" which looks over the people and the land of the Coeur d'Alene. It was cut from the "Grandfather Tree" which looked over the Coeur d'Alene people for hundreds of years from the land near the present day town of Worley. The "Grandfather Tree" was located along the route to Coeur d'Alene Lake, the Spokane Plains and the hunting grounds on the Camas and Bitterroot prairies. The Coeur d'Alene hung different ornaments and medicine bundles on the tree to protect them and grant them good luck during their travels and hunts. Dominick J. "Sonny" Curley, Coeur d'Alene Tribal Member and Councilman fought for many years to save the "Grandfather Tree" but it was cut down in 2007 to make room for a four lane highway. This tree was cut from the original and was dedicated to Curley.
