Culebra is a small island just off the coast of Puerto Rico. The island is home to one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, Playa Flemenco. The island is much smaller than its more popular neighbor to the south, Vieques but is just a great, if not better! If you want to avoid crowds and enjoy a laid-back vacation, then Culebra is where you want to go! The population is around 2,000 - and it is a great mix of Puerto Ricans and expats.
There are shops, restaurants, and hotels - but many will not be open during the off-season. Some places only open when the ferry comes into the port at Dewey, and right around the port things can be pretty chaotic when the ferrys are coming and going. As soon as they leave, the chaos dies and it is quiet and pleasant! The ferrys run from Fajardo an average of 3 times per day and it is very inexpensive.

Ok...so I debated about whether I wanted to make any mention of Culebra. It is the coolest place and I don't want anyone else going there, but I guess in all fairness I'll tell the truth. I fell in love with the beach, the people, the relaxed attitude, and even the warm breezy air. This is the kind of place where you do what you want when you want to, and nobody gives a shit otherwise! You catch a 2 hour ferry from Fajardo to Culebra. The ferry costs $2.25 USD - by far the cheapest ticke...

So, I NEEDED to get away for spring break (or go nutty) and after exploring various options to visit friends to no avail, I somewhat randomly chose Puerto Rico (and when I say randomly I mean the ticket was cheaper than most :)) While flying to Portland over a year ago I met this guy who was living on Culebra and it sounded like a great place to check out...and just what I needed- off the beaten track, the beach, quiet, a lesser known spot in the caribbean...perfect! I was also reminded of ...

Woke up very early to catch the ferry from Fajardo to Culebra. The breakfast served by the B&B of french toast, fresh fruit, oatmeal, coffee and juice provided the engery boost to kick start the early day. With perfect directions, we made it to the ferry terminal about 8:30, a half an hour before the scheduled depart time. This gave us a chance to buy r/t tickets and find parking at a leisurely pace. Now, there is street parking, but again, we decied to park in a l...
