Visit part of the longest volcanic tunnel in the world! Feb 25, 2008
I'm on a roll! I've managed to make it to the most important attractions on the island without getting lost once! La Cueva de los Verdes is another interesting tourist attraction operated by Lanzarote’s local government (which is called the Cabildo Insular). The visit – a guided tour of the tunnel in Spanish and English – costs eight Euros and if you enjoy tunnels, this is a great visit for you! Just watch your head!! There are a few places that require some significant ducking to avoid a nasty bump on the head!!
The cave is actually part of the “Atlantis Tunnel” which is the longest volcanic tunnel in the world at approximately 7.5 kms. It was formed about 4 million years ago by a lava flow from an eruption of the “La Corona” volcano. Evidently the lava that flowed down the hillside to the sea was very liquid in consistency and while the top hardened, the fast-flowing lava below and the gasses it formed when hitting the ocean formed this interesting tunnel.
The guide told us that the reason for the name “los Verdes” doesn´t have to do with colors inside the caves (which are mostly black, tan and reddish!) but from the name of the owners of the land above the cave at some time.
The acoustics inside the tunnel are supposed to be great, so they have set up some nice lighting and a stage with plenty of seating for concerts. I would like to see a concert in a cave some day!
The whole visit took about two hours and required some walking and bending over which might make it a little hard for someone with back problems. Also, you really have to be careful not to scrape your head on the low rocks - they're very sharp. Other than that, this is a great chance to see the inside of a volcanic tunnel, see interesting rock formations and escape the heat on the surface above! You'll even learn something here!
I love visiting tunnels, so this was a great place for me. My four-star rating is cause I'm trying to be objective. I love caves, and the guide was great!
