Not barred here... May 16, 2013
Nestled within the Pensacola Naval Air Museum, the Cubi Bar Café is a reasonable dining option (and the only one around if you are touring the museum). A somewhat complex layout, the diner has multiple dining rooms and a bar. The main seating area fronts the main museum lobby, so you can gaze upon the aircraft displays while enjoying your meal.

I did just that, sampling their ‘Barnstormer Salad’, which featured marinated steak topped by vinegar and teriyaki dressing. It wasn’t spectacular, but quite good and reasonably priced, a rare treat when your diner commands a monopoly. Better yet, the service was quick and friendly.

When I returned later for a coffee at the bar, I learned Cubi has an interesting history. The eatery gained its name by serving as the Cubi Point Officer’s Club in the Philippines for forty years from 1950-90. They had brought the original bar back as well as the many plaques which were the institution’s hallmark (plaques were issued for each Navy and Marine tour through the Western Pacific theater, and they were routinely donated to adorn the “Plaque Bar’s” wall).

If you are touring the museum and hungry, a visit is recommended!
