Casa Particular

There are few hostels in Cuba. They do it differently there. They have something called "casa particular," which is someones house. They rent you a private room in their house, and make you breakfast. They have a menu and everything. They're are official ones with a license from the government, and some cheaper ones that are not official, and are not guaranteed to be safe. I stayed at a casa particular, recommended by another place that was booked, which said it was a hostel, on the internet. It was $25 for two rooms in a private section of the house. Nice couple that own the house. If your friend wanted to check it out, it's right on the corner of San Francisco and Jesus Peregrino, which is easiest to find after arriving to the nearest busy cross street, about two blocks away: Calzada de Infanta and Avenida Salvador Allende. This is in the regular neighborhood area, a 20 minute walk or 3 - 5 minute bus ride into old havannah, the more tourist area.

Hotel Telegrafo: (On the corner of Paseo de Marti and Neptuno)‪ hoteltelegrafo-cuba.com

In the tourist area, if you're wanting to stay at a nice hotel, the nicest one I saw was Hotel Telegrafo. I didn't check the prices, but it's one of three in the area that offer internet, which is $6 per hour, on a dial up network, desktop. You may have to wait in the hotel lobby for others who are on one of the two computers. Don't plan on "needing" the internet. It's illegal for Cubans to have it. They get it illegally, via Venezuela somehow, if they can afford it. E. Hemmingway used to hang out in this area all the time, in the cafe a couple doors down actually. (The nicest looking one.)

There are many other hotels on this strip that are less expensive, walking north from Hotel Telegrafo, for around $40 per night I believe.

- Check out the small strip O'Reily, right across the plaza in front of hotel telegrafo, going toward the water, or even the opposite way.
