By taxi back to Havana, a more interesting journey avoiding the autopista and along the north coast, badly affected by the summer hurricanes. Lots of houses were still under repair. Candida is away at her daughter's in Germany. A new casa 100 yards away was found and we booked in at Milagro's. It'…

Landing in Havana was like visiting a movie set where everything is meant to look old. You could tell it was a police state. From inside the parked plane I watch out the window and airport employees had to be checked with a security wand to simply approach the plane and unload luggage. Another man …

Last night was fairly tame, lack of sleep and the long trip in and out of Habana had taken its tool. Wait I did have a decent nap on the way home and the alcohol here is free. Plus I have come to really enjoy those fruity drinks, una Piña Colada y un Miami Vice señor. Gracis amigo. Yes I got a g…

An American in Cuba: Havana Travel Photos

I flew to Jamaica for my cousins wedding for a week, but the tourist-ridden streets of Ochio Rios left me desiring for adventure. So I hopped aboard a flight bound for Havana alone with no plan or knowledge of possible punishment by the American government. It turned out to be one of the best trips of my life!

The ten hour flight took forever at some points, yet was almost over before we knew it. I checked the overhead TV screens once an hour, every hour. Not by keeping time, oh no. It's just that every time I wondered how much time had past and how long before we would reach our destination, I looke…

To start, a few things that will be useful for those planning trips to Cuba: [a] make sure you take a GOOD guidebook with you (we used the Lonely Planet guide which had just been published).  While older guidebooks will be somewhat helpful, things seem to change very fast in Cuba and a n…

Cuba was great! It was pretty much one big party when we were at the resort, but then when in Havana, it's very historical, and some more partying. I had heard before I had left that the food isn't good in Cuba, but at the resort I was at (Tryp Peninsula) the food was really good. The beaches are awesome in Varadero, and the people are pretty friendly. Over all a great time.

This is one of my favourite countries to travel to and around. I feel like traveling back in time sometimes; its cities, villages and sceneries are almost unique to the island and, of course, the ambiance created by the political situation and the mix of races with their music and joy of life, in spite of the hardships!

Tropicana is THE cabaret show in Havana. It's not exactly cheap; we paid 90 Cuban convertibles (US$90) each for a front row table., including dinner. You get a free half bottle of rum as well. It was an excellent evening out, though. Well worth doing if you're in Havana.
