A Cathedral in Glass Jun 16, 2013
The Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove California a a must-see for the architecture buff. Designed by Philip Johnson in 1980, the sparkling glass exterior reflects the surrounding landscape, making it appear you are looking though the building and beyond. It's quite an effect! The vast open atrium design of the interior with seating for 2,736 is impressive, too. Unfortunately, the church was not open, so we could not go inside, only look through the doors. (The doors curiously did not have door handles. Perhaps they are opened and closed remotely.)

The Crystal Cathedral was but as mega-church for the Garden Grove Community Church congregation of Richard Schuller. (It had initially gained fame as the first drivin-in congregation.) In dimensions, the Crystal Cathedral is 415 feet (127 m) in length, 207 feet (63 m) in width and 128 feet (39 m)in height. In front is a 236 foot (72 m) Bell Tower.

In its current configuration, the Crystal Cathedral is a church, but not a cathedral (seat of a bishop) in the traditional sense of the term. However, the Crystal Cathedral Ministries, in the face of financial difficulties, sold the building grounds to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange in 2012 for future use as the diocese's new cathedral. So, it is to become an actual cathedral. It is to be named Christ Cathedral when the transfer takes place, but will probably always be known as Crystal Cathedral. (I hope door handles will be added!)

Other landmark structures are also here. In back of Crystal Cathedral are the Arboretum, the original church of 1961, and the 13 story Tower of Hope, designed by Richard and Dion Neutra in 1967. A variety of sculptures on Biblical themes are placed around the grounds. (It will be interesting to see which sculptures the Diocese of Orange retains.)

I remember Schuller's old Hour of Power television show at the peak of his popularity. It will be interesting to see what changes the Catholics make to his church.
