Cruise on the Brunei River Apr 22, 2014
Certainly one of the key attractions in Brunei is its eco-tourism aspect and most travellers will venture out into the jungles of Borneo to experience the wonders of the sub-tropical environment and all of its flora and fauna wonders. However, I happened to be in Brunei for business and did not have this opportunity. Therefore the next best thing was a boat tour of the Brunei River. Although Bandar Seri Begawan is fairly spread out, the "downtown" area is pretty small and the major sites are all within walking distance of each other, especially if you happen to be staying at the Radisson, which is the only western style hotel in the city. On a very warm and humid December afternoon, my collegue and I walked the short distance down to the Brunei River front where a small congregation of water taxi boats were pulled up against the concrete river's edge trying to solicite business either from tourists or, more likely, water commuters for residents of the "floating city", a residential area completely build on stilts over the river. After a short and very easy haggle session, we got the price we wanted, donned our life vests and boarded the sea-going vessle. Our 1.5 hour tour would bring us east/northeast up the Brunei river to duck in a out of the many mangrove forests in hopes to catch some sightings of local wildlife. We would then return and tour the water streets of the "floating city" before we debarked back on the concrete dock. The able (and safe) boat pilot knew the nooks and crannies of the river banks like the back of his hand and was able to get us in to see many of the big-nosed monkeys so famous in Borneo, as well as a huge crocodile and a monitor lizzard that was as big as a good sized croc. He then brought us through the water town and pointed out various points of interest such as the fire station, schools and various notable homes. The trip was quite enjoyable and worthwhile. Luckily, the boat was covered so as to keep the brutally hot Brunei sun off of our heads, however, there was an uncovered portion for those looking to absorb the rays or catch a quick glimpse up in the trees when viewing the animals.
