Crowne Plaza Washington National Airport Arlington Reviews
Convenient stay near Crystal City Metro Jul 17, 2010
We stayed at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Airport Arlington, which is in Crystal City, from 13-20 June 2010. The multi-story hotel in the Priority Club chain with Holiday Inn, is in a convenient location with easy access to the Metro public transit system of Washington, DC and the Crystal City Shops which has a large maze of underground shopping malls and street-level restaurants, very close by free shuttle from Reagan National Airport.
The hotel even boasts a Starbuck's Coffee Shop inside and an adjacent pool outside. It has its own restaurant and bar. Although the food there is not good (luckily it was cheap and had 2 "happy hours" on weeknights to get a personal pan Pizza Hut pizza), the bar is friendly and well-stocked with TVs to watch the news or sports. The biggest problem we had with this hotel was the large student groups (8th graders on a class trip to DC?) would "hang out" with their adult chaperones in the bar at night, sometimes until 11PM-Midnight.
The hotel is an older property which has been renovated, but the original architectural design of having the fan for the kitchen run all the way up to the roof through all 14 floors instead of venting to the outside was a problem for us about halfway through our stay. We had to call the front desk to complain about the noise from the ventilation fans in the wall with high-pitched squeaking which was inconsistent and disturbing. The manager sent the bi-lingual Chief Engineer to check it out right away. He conferred with his Spanish-speaking technician as they took about 20 minutes to isolate the noise problem, and we ended up having to change rooms since they would have to cut a hole in the wall to service the ventilation shaft running along side our room. This was a bit inconvenient for us but we were not compensated for having to change rooms mid-stay, although they were very friendly and prompt in resolving the issue.
Construction was going on at street level and an overhead walkway near the Starbuck's entrance to the hotel, but this did not bother us too much. Luckily, both of our rooms were on the opposite side from this construction noise/view. Both rooms also had a narrow view of the Potomac River & Reagan National Airport. There is also a large parking garage under the hotel, but parking regulation seemed a bit chaotic with signs slapped on several cars that they would be towed since they were not registered guests and had not paid for parking.
I was happy to see my Priority Club points for staying at this Crowne Plaza Hotel transferred seamlessly to Delta Airlines where I earned miles on Delta instead of hotel points.
Computers with printers were available in the lobby and we were able to watch the World Cup Soccer Finals games in the bar. Crowne Plaza Hotel Airport Arlington even has their own massage shower heads with their name on them! The rooms have a flat-screen TV and small refrigerator, along with a small tub/shower combo and very comfy beds.
Our recommendations to the staff in our comment card, in addition to keeping kids out of the bar especially at night, was to keep all the kids groups on a different floor from adult business guests. Luckily I had the Priority Club membership which allowed us to stay on the Priority Club floor which was quiet. My business colleagues on the same floor with the kids groups had to rely on the "bouncer" positioned by the elevators on his floor for "noise abatement" who did not seem to be in a good mood.
Overall, I would stay at this hotel again if I had business in Crystal City or possibly the Pentagon, but I prefer the Sheraton National Airport Hotel west of the Pentagon overlooking the Air Force Memorial myself.
