Crowders Mountain State Park Reviews
Jan 07, 2008
Having Crowders Mountain State Park nearby makes life here much more tolerable. It is quiet, scenic, and well-maintained by park rangers. The park hosts a variety of raptors, songbirds, rabbits, big fat squirrels, raccoons, salamanders, chipmunks, foxes and other animals.
Crowders Mountain has over 15 miles of hiking trails, ranging in difficulty from easy to strenuous, and the payoff of great scenery starts just minutes from the trailheads. One of the trailheads (Linwood Road Access) provides access to the 2-mile Tower Trail and the .9 mile Backside Trail. The Visitor Center trailhead is more centrally located, positioned in relation to the trails much like the center point of a figure-8.
Views from the top of the Pinnacle Trail and the Tower Trail stretch for 25 miles. The Charlotte skyline is nicely visible from the tower on clear days, and the hills of the piedmont region provide a relaxing view from the pinnacle.
Crowders Mountain State Park also has some nice primitive campsites and group campsites approximately one mile from the Visitor Center parking lot. The one mile hike required to access the campsites helps to preserve the quiet in the area, by discouraging less motivated campers (also known as "riff-raff").
Local rock climbers frequent Crowders Mountain to scale 150-foot vertical cliffs...register at the office beforehand if you want to climb.
Crowders Mountain also has a small lake where you can rent canoes and paddle around, but as I write this; our region is experiencing a severe drought, making the lake look more like a puddle.
Crowders Mountain State Park is a gem in an otherwise unremarkable area. If you pass through this part of North Carolina, I recommend you check it out.
Please tread lightly...
