Crossing the border from Canada to Michigan Jun 10, 2010
Crossing borders from one country to another can be anywhere from a quick wave from the border guard to a nightmare for some folks. It can take a few seconds to quite a bit of time and trouble. As we approached the US border from Canada over the Blue River Bridge the traffic flow went from normal, which means doing the speed limits or slightly higher for some folks, to absolutely stopped and inching forward every minute or two. Now there were no special circumstances that would have created an extra slowdown, it is just that the United States just goes completely overboard with its security. Going into Canada we had been asked a few very routine questions and showed our passports before being nicely greeted and waived through. Coming back was a totally different story. It took us well over an hour to make our way over the bridge, and then pick a lane as the approach widened from three lanes to about a dozen. They use cameras to look under your vehicle, double check your license plate to your driver’s license, ask questions to make sure you give the right answers in the language from your area, and only god knows what else. What a pain!!

Hi Roger had similar experiences crossing from Vancouver, BC to Bellingham & Seattle, Washington and sometimes it gets scary when people are taken from their cars for questioning or searches (under the Peace Arch sign saying "Children of a Common Mother") We just returned from Europe where no one bothers to look at your passport when you cross national boundaries
