Perfectly groomed cross-country skiing trails around Mt. Kahleberg plateau Jan 29, 2017
The most popular cross-country skiing area is the plateau around Mt. Kahleberg. Reason is that it is easily accessible from Altenberg, Zinnwald or Rehefeld (parking in each, bus stops, train station in Altenberg), the trail network is very dense, and it is very snow reliable.

I started in Altenberg vis-a-vis the train station/Tourist Information at 754 m above sea level (and 2 minutes from the big parking at the skilift, fee!) With only little incline the trail climbs up to Mt. Kahleberg (905 m). If you're short on time you can skip Mt. Kahleberg and go directly to Zinnwald (880 m), then head down to Rehefeld. The cross-country skiing trails here are mostly separate from winter hiking trails. However, the forest roads on which the trails are groomed are wide enough for both hikers and skiers anway.

Between Mt. Kahleberg and Zinnwald is the Biathlon centre for the professional athletes, you pass it but access is not allowed.

I use to have a break for hot tea or so at one of the snack places, like the little hut on Mt. Kahleberg or BeerenhĂĽtte in Zinnwald. Please see separate reviews.

There are several options for skiing down to Rehefeld (700 m). From Mt. Kahleberg the trail starts with a rather challenging downhill portion, then it's all easy. From Zinnwald you can ski along the border to the Czech Republic in a lovely valley.

The distance Altenberg - Mt. Kahleberg - Zinnwald - Rehefeld is approximately 11 km.
