See the Home of Robert E. Howard Mar 27, 2017
Cross Plains is a town of about 1000 (down 8% since 2000) located at the intersection of Texas Highways 36 and 279 in Callahan County in the Panhandle Plains Section of Texas. Cross Plains was established in 1877 and was first known as Turkey Creek and Schleicher. The name Cross Plains likely came from the crossing of military roads and stagecoaches nearby. Like many towns in the area, Cross Plains enjoyed a brief oil boom in the 1920. The most famous resident of Cross Plains was Robert E. Howard who created the character Conan the Barbarian. The Cross Plains Library has a great collection of first editions and original manuscripts of Robert E. Howard's works.
