Cross & Back-Country Ski Trails, Rossland Jun 05, 2010
Aside from the official groomed, and highly affordable, Black Jack XC Ski area, the hills in and around Rossland are packed with ski options.
The Paulson Ski Area at Nancy Greene Summit is another groomed option for those who like that kind of thing.
But for me, I'll generally grab the dogs and head out onto one of many, many forest service roads that fall into disuse during the winter.
There are trails at the top of the Cascade Highway (including the 7-summits bike trail), at Nancy Greene Summit, and in the hills that unfold around the town. There are over a dozen cabins to ski to and have a hot-chocolate in, you just need to ask the locals.
Trail maps are available at the local bike/ski shop - and anything that is marked as a forest road is pretty much open to public use in the winter.
The groomed trails are cheap ($10/day) but this open-country style is totally free. You could stay a month and do a new trail every day.
The summer mountain biking is also amazing.
