Arkwright's Mill - where industrialization began Jan 15, 2017
This is the main reason to visit Cromford and a place where history was made. Although some mills are older (like Lombe's silk mill in Derby), Arkwright's Mill in Cromford is considered to be the first factory in the world. It was built in 1772 and was the first of many of its kind. Many things which found their work into everyday work life – like being paid per time and not per goods processed – were first introduced here. Arkwright's success relied not only on his new form of organisation, but also on his invention, the so-called “water frame”, a water-powered spinning machine. With the invention of new technologies, water-powered mills became inefficient compared to steam engine powered ones. Also the advent of the railway meant that industries moved to larger cities with better connection like Manchester. Arkwright's first mill closed in the 19th century. After being used for several purposes, it was acquired by the Arkwright society and turned into a museum. Arkwright's Mill gained UNESCO World Heritage Status (as part of the Derwent Valley Mills) in 2001.

Arkwright's Mill is home to a handful of small shops and a café. It also has two exhibitions related to the history of the mill. Tickets for the In the former main hall of the mill, you can see a multimedia show called “The Arkwright Experience”, a guide will also explain a couple of things about how the mill once looked like. Tickets for exhibition and “Arkwright Experience” together are 3GBP, tickets for exhibitions and tour (audio or guided tour) but without “Arkwright Experience” are 5 GBP, all three (exhibitions, “Arkwright Experience” and tour) together are 7 GBP. Audioguide is available in English and Chinese, you'll have to leave 10 GBP cash behind as a deposit which you get back when you return the audioguide. The audioguide tour takes around 1 ½ hours and goes partly through the village. All info/prices as of 2016.
