Visit Crockett, Texas and Houston County May 20, 2017
Crockett is a town of about 6700 (down 7% since 2000) located at the intersection of US Highway 287 and three Texas Highways in Houston County in the Piney Woods Section of Texas. David Crockett came through here in 1836 on his way to San Antonio and the Alamo and stopped to visit old family friends, the Gossetts. After Texas gained its independence, the first county in the new republic was formed. The Gossetts donated land for the establishment of the county seat and named the county for Sam Houston the president of the republic and the town for their friend David Crockett. The first county courthouse was built in 1838 and was made of logs. The current county courthouse (the 5th) was built in 1939 using the Moderne style of architecture with Art Deco highlights. It was designed by Houston County native Blum Hester. The courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
