Hello! I would not advise you to make a base anywhere, but to travel and change places. Dalmatia is worth seeing fully, without one day trips. For example, on the island of Brac the town of Bol is excellent, with Zlatni rat beach..Island of Hvar with the town of Hvar, and also island of Vis, with towns Vis, for more peaceful rest, and Komiza, for a more adventure rest :) You can book hotels, but there are also a lot of private houses which you can book also, and make sure they are legal!

That's middle Dalmatia, and if you prefer South Dalmatia I have to advise you to visit Dubrovnik. You can book a hotel, but also, when you come at the bus station (buses for Split go every hour) you can find a lot of local people who want to let their rooms out, the same as in Split, you'll see..They are perfectly safe, especially if you taka an old lady :) In Dubrovnik area you can visit island of Mljet (excellent, with an island within an island) and Korcula (especially the town of KOrcula)..I think I don't have to tell you about Dubrovnik..Just, if you come somewhere try buying in Konzum or Kerum shops (both are national chain of shops, and the cheepest variant)..

That's it, ask if you have some more questions :)

Btw, for ferry lines check:

Those old ladies at bus stations are most surely illegal, but you can always ask. Also if you like to take a room when you come to the site you must see a blue sign that says "sobe" "rooms" or "private" and a star attached to this kind of acomodation (so the same as any hotel)..Also, if you like room and not hotel accomodation, you can come to any turist office and aske them if they have anyone licensed for this..They should also help you..Also you can google "private accomodation croatia" :)
That's it..just ask if you have any questions.. :)

Antalescu,
Thank you for all your information; there seems there is so much to see. I will only be there for a week and am not sure i'll fit everything in. I am also travelling alone and therefore a little apprehensive about renting a private room. How do you ensure they are legal?

Croatia has a lot of nice beaches and it is quite cheap. I also liked cheap Bulgaria, Varna. Certainly we have also nice beaches in Finland, but not so hot weather! :)
