The Crieffe Guesthouse Jun 02, 2014
The guest house is located on a small road in uptown Kingston. The guest house probably taken the name from the Crieffe Road on which is located. The road is pretty quite with a couple of goats wondering on the other side of the road from our guest house. The road is in a quiet residential area with a couple of schools as the closest neighbors.

The guest house is on a small plot of land with several buildings spread out over the area. The building gives the impression that they have been put up on different times probably depending on how good the business was and if there was enough money to expand the property. By now there isn’t much garden left and what is is used as a walking path to the main building at the end of the land and as a parking lot for the guest in front - though it doesn’t look like many of the guest actually arrive in car. I figure you could use a car at this place since it isn’t really close to the center of the town - hence you are either in for a long walk to points of interest around the city or you need to take a taxi.

We arrive to the Crieffe Guesthouse by taxi from the airport and when we come the cab driver has to push the buzzer so we can come in - I figure even though Uptown is the best part of Kingston the people living here still likes big gates to try to keep some trespassers’ out. We get out of the cab and walk up along the pretty long path to the reception area where the receptionist has her office behind a gated window and can only pass the key out through a small hole in the fence. We manage to get the key and pay for the room including a 1.000 Jamaican dollar key deposit which correspond to about 10 USD so we definitely didn’t forget to return the key at the end of our stay. There is a sign with the prices - and the exchange rate is very outdated so if you can it is advantageous to pay in Jamaican dollars instead of US dollars.

The room is on the first floor of a building which looks like it is a bit newer than the rest of the complex. The room is decent for a guest house but the value isn’t quite what we had hoped for. But generally the standards in Jamaica are somewhat lower than what I have seen in places I would compare to Jamaica like Asia, Eastern Europe or neighboring Cuba. There is a television and air-condition in the room and a chair.

There is no breakfast served at the hotel and there isn’t many places close by open for breakfast. It is possible to buy a cup of coffee if you like along with other beverages. You can sit out at the tables along the building to have a cup of coffee and eat breakfast if you have done a bit of shopping for this. We had some stuff for breakfast so it worked out pretty great for us but I would assume you risk going hungry if you don’t prepare.

We booked the guest house through booking.com as we do not want wander around in Jamaica on our first day of arrival.

We take taxi from the airport to the guest house directly and it seems the taxi driver know the location pretty well. It was fix price by taxi from airport but I do not recall the exact cost. US$ is widely accepted and it seems the only currency people prefer to use than the local money, so we do not have trouble with it since I carried pretty a lot of it.

When the taxi arrived in front of the guest house gate, the driver need to push the intercom button and speak through the speaker to be able to let inside to the drive way.

We decided to stop here and get out from the taxi, take out our bag and then walk to the drive way.

Interestingly, nobody come over to great us after the gate open, instead we have to walk all the way to the end of the building and then press the bell and talk through the secure door with the woman who managed the place.

Once she saw us, and confirm we were the guests she then open the door and talk to us.

She asked about the booking.com confirmation paper and then asked to pay cash in advanced for the whole stays which was for two nights plus a key deposit for around usd 10 which was refundable when we check out. We have choice to pay in local money but she prefer to get pay in usd.

Not much to see around the guest house as the place is located in the residential area and no shops around it. It was pretty quiet at this street as it was a small ended street and a couple of schools next door neighbour, and one local café nearby but we did not manage to eat there as it has no food left when we come over for dinner. It is also quite far from city centre and need taxi to get to and from centre.

Our room located at the ground floor building and it was okay but not the cleanest place as I can see dust accumulating around the kitchen sink, cupboard, etc, and I clean the whole place before I settle in. For the price of usd50 per night without any breakfast, this place is not a good value for money. However I notice after our stay in Jamaica, the accommodation standard was lower than in any other country even compare with Asia and Cuba which you get good value accommodation for your dollars.

The room was quite small and bare with one double bed and air condition and a chair. The mattress was not the best. At least the air condition work well and not noisy since it was really hot in Jamaica.

The bathroom were really basic with a cotton to cover up and act as a door. We also asked for soap and toilet paper since it was not supply.

I personally would not recommend this place – you probably get better value stay in a hotel in city centre even though it probably more expensive.
