The Mansion on the Hill Feb 23, 2014
Our hotel van dropped us off at Craigdarroch Castle shortly after it opened as 10am. Stepping inside was like stepping back into time. The "castle" was finished in 1890, just a few months after the owner died. His widow moved in with her children. After she died, her daughters sold the place. Over the years, it was a hospital after WWI, a college, a school board office, a music conservatory, and finally a historic landmark.

Spend at least 1.5 - 2 hours going through the mansion, including watching a documentary film about the place. Photos (and flash) are allowed.

Not a real castle, but still pretty cool Jun 22, 2011
Craigdarroch looks like it belongs in the British Isles. Of course it isn't a real castle, it was built between 1887-1890 because such architecture was experiencing a revival at the time. The castle itself is a must-see. It's nestled in a quiet, well-to-do neighborhood with well-tended lawns nearby the Government House. The interior is not quite what you would expect from looking at the exterior. The inside is a museum that details the life of a rich family that lived there until about 1908. Afterwards it was a military hospital, an affiliate of McGill University in Montreal, Victoria College, Victoria Conservatory of Music, and finally a museum. The volunteers are very knowledgeable and will happily answer any questions you can conjure up, like "why is there a buddha statue in such a victorian mansion?" The (concise) answer: because it was fashionable. If you're someone who has a hard time keeping their eyes in focus when visiting a museum, save your money. The view from the outside is the part you shouldn't miss, and it's free.

Not much to say about this castle, other than it's huge, and it's pretty. There's a lot of stairs, but it's well worth the climb.
