Cozumel is a Caribbean island located off of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. Cozumel is a popular port for cruise goers and is well known in the scuba communities. In 1959 Jacques Cousteau discovered the beauty of the coral reefs just south of Cozumel and broadcasted that it was one of the best places to go scuba diving in the entire world.
The Mayan civilization were the first to settle the island in the early part of the first millennium, AD. Relics of from this time period can be found on the mainland but are limited on the island.
Cozumel is also known for as a shopping port and there are over 100 restaurants on the 30 x 16 miles island. Cozumel is still recovering from hurricanes in 2005, but is doing so quickly.
