Courtyard by Marriott Phuket at Surin Beach Reviews
Good for a relaxing holiday Jan 27, 2012
== Location & Getting around ==
The Courtyard by Marriott at Surin Beach is approx. 30 Minutes from Phuket Airport. The surrounding area has some Restaurants, Bars and little stores for almost anything you need, including a Pharmacy, Souvenir- and little Drug-shops. Not to forget about all the massage-saloons. They are just everywhere and you have the chance to get some pretty cheap massages.
The beach is just a three-minute walk away and has some nice restaurants where you can whether sit in our outside, directly on the beach. You can also get your massage at the beach, by the way.
However, theres not much more in this area, its rather a place to relax. If you want to get around, theres a Taxi-Stand right in front of the hotel. We used their taxis a couple of times and it worked good, so seems to be trustworthy. They have some fixed prices, for example 500Baht to Phuket Town or Patong, 700Baht to the Airport. I think you can’t be really central on Phuket, unless you want to stay at Patong area, which might be really loud and exhausting after awhile. We were happy to rather stay at this quiet place and you get everywhere easily.
== Room ==
Rooms are quite big and ours had for whatever reason a king-sized bed. It was really comfortable – not too hard, not too soft – enough pillows from different strength!
It provides a safe with space for notebook and DSLR Camera.
The rooms have a big balcony aswell. The bath was clean and had a shower with space for 3 people. There were always two bottles of free water every day, as in most hotels in Asia. It has a big Flat-Screen, DVD-Player, Air-Con, Hair-Dryer and so on.
== Restaurant ==
Breakfast: For breakfast they serve a huge variety of just anything you can imagine. You’ll find any kind of western food (cold and hot), asian food, vegetables, salad, soups, fruits, drinks – just anything.
But there are two negative aspects.
No.1: Theres not enough space to serve all the guests at almost any time from 8am on. Means when you arrive at the restaurant for breakfast, you’ll have to wait a while until you find a free table. Personnel will assist you for sure.
No.2 is about their so called “statistics”. Cause even though your pre-payed hotel-stay includes breakfast, you will have to sign a bill on your room-account of over 500Baht every single morning, which is pretty weird to me. On the first day I didn’t want to sign it, cause by signing you surely accept it, right? Then I discussed that with them and they said it wont be charged, its only for their internal statistics. Well, I signed it then every morning. So on checkout I checked the room account carefully and everything was okay. No charges for the breakfast.
I wouldn’t use their restaurant for lunch or dinner though, except when they are having the big Thai Buffet once a week. Its at about 590Baht per Person and its worth it. They also have fresh fish twice a week where you can pick the one you like, so this would also be a good day to have dinner at the hotel. At these day they provide live-music at their restaurant, which is really good. On all the other days and for lunch, you should go out and check the restaurants of the surrounding area. They are much cheaper and actually better than the food at the hotel.
Ice is from purified water, so no problem here.
== Service ==
The overall service was pretty good. I was surprised by the comfortable Check-in process: You take seat on a couch in the lobby, get some welcome-drinks and everything is made from there. No stress, no waiting, no other people bothering you.
The staff was really friendly, people at the frontdesk, at the pool, in the restaurant - everyone was just really friendly and kind - they always had a smile on their face.
Room Service was kinda weird, sometimes they came at 11am, sometimes at 4pm.
They also bring the food from the restaurant directly to your room, no extra charge.
You get free towels for the pool and the beach.
Theres a Fitness Center and all the gym equipment appears to be quite new, I was really sad that I forgot my jogging-shoes ;-) Theres also a place for kids, the hotel in general is quite kid-friendly.
The Pool is big and separated it two parts, one part is especially for kids and has waterslides. The area provides enough space for anyone to get a sunbed.
Much more isn’t todo, you could rent a DVD at the MoMo’s Café, cause every room provides a DVD player.
The beach itself is nice but a has a little overkill of sunshades ;-) It was not too crowded though - we stayed in january. The are many little transparent crabs in the sand, they are funny. Theres not too much entertainment at Surin Beach, I think the only thing were two Jet Skies.
Minor negative was an area that looked and stank like there was sewerage piped into the sea. I would steer clear of this area and would never swim nearby. Look for a place more left or right. That stinky smell is also noticeable on the way down to the beach. That really sucks. Just mind this area!
== Who should go there? ==
If you want to party every night, you should look for a place in Patong Beach. If you go to Phuket to relax or have fun with your family, this hotel might be a good choice for you. Most of the guests where European. Because of the kids and music, its a little loud sometimes :-)
