Queens hotel to beat Manhattan Prices Jun 22, 2011
Country Inn and Suites in Queens is a decent choice for those who want to stay close to Manhattan while avoiding sky-rocketing hotel prices in Manhattan itself. My journey to this hotel began with discovering my favorite Manhattan hotel was now charging around 500 USD per night. YIKES! I searched further in Manhattan and found even not-so-good hotels were charging a ton of money also. So, I decided to search in Brooklyn and Queens – where I can still get to Manhattan by subway. I choose Country Inn and Suites because it is only 1 subway stop into mid-town Manhattan.

This hotel is fairly small and the staff gets to know you very well right away. The staff are fairly competent, although they can sometimes seem a bit abrupt – maybe because the hotel can be very busy. I stayed in both a suite and a king bed room with a city view (due to the hotel being almost full when I booked – book early as this hotel is becoming very popular).

The suite is OK and gives you a bit more room – although remember this is still NYC (albeit Queens) and rooms can be on a slightly smaller side. One thing I did not like was that the living room did NOT have any windows. The bedroom has one smaller window but the light is still OK from it. The king room is OK for one person but I imagine could get crowded with two persons. The king room does have a city view – but the window does not allow for great views in the room. You have to get right up to the window and look in one direction to see the city view. The view is fairly nice – however, you need to stand and gawk to see it.

For both rooms, they are kept pretty clean – although as a new hotel, I see quite a few black marks on the walls from people’s luggage. The beds are fairly comfortable. The bathroom is pretty good and well lit - - but the towels need better care – even though they are new I saw quite a few dirty marks on them on occasion and that is a bit gross.

The hotel offers free wifi – it works fine but it is not superfast – but generally workable if you have a newer laptop. Then room also includes breakfast - - you can make you own waffles, toast or grab some bagels, cereal, yogurt, juice, oatmeal, etc. It is not a bad selection for the class of hotel and (relative) price – but be patient, often all seats are full. Also, quite a few items often run out and either are not replaced or slow to be replaced. I found grabbing enough juice, yogurt, and oatmeal to be a good strategy since they disappear fast.

At first, I found the neighborhood a bit depressing – especially since I am used to staying on the Upper West Side. But, the area is basically safe – sometimes feels eerie as the sidewalks can be bare at night. There is a gas station next door with enough food to grab some snacks or drinks if you want. There is a laundry (self-service or full service next door) two-minutes walk away. The best location feature is being so close to Manhattan – just across the Queensboro Bridge. There are 3 very useful subway lines (F, N, Q) in two stations each just 5 minutes walk away. You can get to Manhattan so very easily and can go deep into midtown or lower Manhattan without transferring.

Overall, this is a decent choice for someone on a budget who wants a decent hotel – while being easy and cheap to reach Manhattan. There are other similar type hotels cropping up in the neighborhood, so it may be worth comparing them.
