Afternoon Tea with a difference Aug 25, 2015
My friend had been looking for somewhere we could have Afternoon Tea whilst in York. Of course Betty's Tea Rooms came to mind first, but after a bit of research we decided against the popular choice and opted for 'The Countess Of York' at the National Railway Museum instead - here are my findings:

On arrival

After meandering around the Railway Museum we headed outside to the gardens situated between 'The Great Hall' and 'Station Hall' of the museum and towards the beautifully restored railway carriage where our Afternoon Tea would be taken. The carriage itself is situated on a lovely platform area, which makes it seem that it has actually pulled into a station, and there is lovely floral displays too - which makes for a great photo opportunity prior to boarding.

The Afternoon Tea Experience

As we head towards the carriage door entrance we were greeted by Theresa who would be our waitress for the day - she was very hospitable and her uniform was that of someone who would spend their day working on such an opulent form of transport - we actually felt like we were boarding the Orient Express at this point. We were shown to a table for two, half way down the carriage, and we were stunned at the attention to detail. From beautiful pictures on the carriage walls, to luxurious linen laid tables with bone china tea sets to cutesy curtains at the carriage windows with pot plants and ornaments dotted around.

Upon being seated we were given a menu, which gave us a list of alternative beverages that could be taken with our afternoon tea, however, on this occasion we opted for good old English Tea, though we could have paid extra and had a glass of champagne. Theresa was on hand to take our drinks order and in no time at all we were indulging in a cuppa from a silver tea service. Theresa then brought us our afternoon tea, she explained in great detail the offerings on our plates:

Cream Cheese and Cucumber on a malted bloomer

Ham and watercress with tomato chutney on a white bloomer

Coronation chicken on a white bloomer

Blue cheese and red onion tart

Home baked scone with vanilla flavoured clotted cream and homemade jam

Lemon drizzle cake

Raspberry and almond slice

Creme brulee

Lemon cheesecake

.......and if that wasn't enough we were told that there was a further plate of sandwiches to follow.

I have to say that the food was exquisite, and we spent a good hour and a half enjoying the lovely food. Theresa was very attentive, coming back a number of times to check that everything was fine with our dining experience and she even offered to take a photo of us both as a souvenir. There was so much cake that we asked if it was at all possible to take the left overs home - our cakes were brought back in a small cake box, carefully presented and decorated with our token flower.

All in all a fabulous experience, lovely food, attentive service all in the most beautiful quirky dining area. Actually can't wait to go back.
