I was in Costa Rica from Nov 20-27. Spent 1 day in Sarapiqui, 5 days in Arenal, and 1 day in San Jose. Some things I learned on this trip. First, if you're traveling solo, use public transportation otherwise, I would recommend renting a SUV. Most places will charge $20+ more for an automatic so make sure to ask beforehand. Second, if you're going to book a tour, make sure to negotiate as it can save you $10-$25 per tour, especially through your hotel. Third, getting around from one city to another can take up 1/2 the day. If the locals say it takes 3 hours, give it 4, especially if it's your 1st time there. Roads do not have names and one wrong turn can kill an hour. In Sarapiqui, the best thing to do is rafting and horsback riding to the waterfalls. Pretty cool stuff. In Arenal, there are so many things to, but my top activities are: rafting (rio toro), venado caves (very unique), Arenal volcano hike (near sun down to see the lava rocks and sunset), Tabacon hot springs, and hiking to Arenal Waterfalls. Most of the hikes, you can do it yourself. Costa Rica is not as cheap as most ppl think. To change money, go to the bank for the best rates and shortest lines. I will definitely come back next year..this time to see the coast. One more thing, bring a watch since most hotels don't have a clock.
