The strange world of the Hotel Cosmos Mar 16, 2016
Towering above the Piata Negruzzi slightly to the south of the city centre, the Hotel Cosmos is a Soviet-style pile of concrete that has partly been refurbished.

I made a mistake on entering, as I stupidly asked the man in the black suit sitting under the reception sign at the front desk. No, no, he wasn't anything to do with reception. So who was? He rolled his eyes, and pointed me towards three ladies at another desk who did very good impressions of being incredibly busy for a couple of minutes before attending to me. The key took some finding, on an antique revolving wooden key hanger, but once found, they became a little friendlier and directed me up to my room on the 7th floor.

The room was fairly basic but comfortable enough, and at £21 a night (around 500 something lei), a good deal. The room was full of instructions and warnings, and the only bit of information in the big folder by the phone was a list of charges for broken furniture, ranging from a couple of euros for a cup to several hundred for a new toilet bowl should I have an unfortunate accident.

The reception area was a busy place, partly because many of the floors are set aside for offices, so there was a constant stream of people walking through to the lifts. The front of the hotel was mostly taken up with a motorcycle shop, and a shiny black door just off the main entrance led to a basement casino. Left of the reception was a bar area, where some French high school students on some sort of exchange trip had managed to get hold of some beer and were slowly getting drunk out of sight of their teachers. Later in the evening, Polish businessmen and Turkish truck drivers shared bottles of vodka with a gaggle of whores who spent their time knitting when there were no customers.

I stayed a few nights here, and the receptionists grew friendlier each day. They tried their best to help me with my travel plans, although they weren't very sure about getting to Orheiul Vechi, one of Moldova's top tourist attractions, and following their advice meant I had to skip that. The final day, when leaving for Romania, they were about to send me to the wrong bus station, until the black-suited man broke his silence and intervened, so maybe tourist information is not their forte.

Breakfast was on the first floor above the bar in a room that would have had a good view over the square had it not been for the net curtains everywhere. It was a help-yourself affair, presided over by a no-nonsense lady who paraded up and down with a trolley taking hot drinks orders when she felt like it and ignoring guests when she didn't.

My room for the first few nights was at the back of the hotel, overlooking some apartment blocks. Not the best view in the world, but not terrible either. Returning after my trip to Transnistria, I was given a slightly more expensive room (£26 or 650 lei) which was more comfortable, newly decorated and had a view out the front over Piata Negruzzi.

Those looking for five start comfort and service probably won't find it here (there are suites available on the top floor, choose from deluxe or "unrefurbished"), but I enjoyed my stay in the Cosmos. It was an experience, sometimes strange, sometimes amusing, and compared to other hotels in the city, it was pretty good value. It's also very easy to find coming from the airport at night, as the shuttle bus passes right next to it.

Cheap central Soviet style option in Chisinau Oct 19, 2009
I really liked this hotel but it wouldn't be to everybody's taste. If you want modernity forget it. As a cheap option for a great location it is ideal. No more than E30 per night for a comfortable room in a hotel just a 5 minute walk from Chisinau train station, perfect after a whole day on the train from Kiev. There is a coffee bar next to the reception which will happily serve travellers coming off the overnight train from Bucharest. Inside the Cosmos is a classic former Soviet Union style hotel. Decor probably hasn't changed since the 1970s. Wonderfully kitsch wallpaper, bedding and carpets will take you back in time. Showers were good, seem to have been updated. Rooms also come with a good sized fridge, balcony and satellite TV with English channels.

Breakfast was great, one of the best I've had, but ruined by the playing of non stop rave and house music in the dining room at full blast which is not everyone's thing at 8 in the morning. Special mention of the wonderful ladies on reception. Very helpful and friendly, a pleasure to deal with.
