Cosmopolitan Hotel Hong Kong Reviews
Eh, it was okay Oct 19, 2010
The Cosmopolitan Hotel in Hong Kong is located in the Wan Chai section on Hong Kong Island, right across from the Happy Valley Race Track. It's also a short cab ride from the MTR Wan Chai station and lively night spots. But without a taxi or a shuttle, it's pretty difficult to get around to the sites. Still, I have to give props to guest services; they gave me excellent advice on traveling around HK.
The hotel itself was clean, but not really impressive. The lobby was rather small, and the only reason people hung out there was for the free wifi. I paid for a deluxe room with a daily buffet breakfast, which cost me about $177 per night (including taxes) - the most I've ever spent on a hotel room.
Was it worth it?
Well, in most cities in America, I could find a decent 4-star hotel for a lot less money. I would consider the Cosmopolitan more like a 3-star hotel. The room was smallish, even though I upgraded to a deluxe, and using the tiny shower was a little tricky for a big guy like me; I kept knocking the curtain open every time I turned around. The wifi in the room cost about $1.50 USD per day for 24 hour access, but it was spotty at times.
Still, the room was very clean (except for the dusty liquor and water bottles on the shelf and the accompanying glasses), and the hotel had style. The flat-screen TV showed 5 English-speaking channels, which is actually more than I thought it would.
By far, the best feature in the hotel was the daily breakfast buffet at the Le Maison de Orient restaurant in the hotel. The all-you-can-eat meal featured both western and eastern foods, from scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, toast and cereal to fried rice, noodles and dim sum. I love the variety and the freshness of the food; it was a great way to start each day.
Ultimately, I enjoyed my stay here. Most Hong Kong hotels are ridiculously expensive, so compared to most, my rate at this hotel was probably average. If you're squeamish about hostels and don't mind taking a few extra steps to get around HK, this may be an OK hotel for you.
