Cortez is located in Montezuma County in southwest Colorado. It is a great base from which to explore Mesa Verde National Park and San Juan National Forest.
Often referred to as the gateway to "canyon country", Cortez's economy is heavily dependent on tourism. This could also explain the large number of accommodation options for a comparatively small town.
Mesa Verde is an expansive national park in southwest Colorado. The greater area, inclusive of the Canyon of the Ancients, has one of the oldest standing human settlements in North America.
Mancos is a small town with few services on US Hwy 160 just East of Cortez and Mesa Verde N Park.
