Corpus Christi Procession in Krakow Jun 03, 2010
Corpus Christi is a high Roman Catholic holiday in honour of the Eucharist on the second Thursday after Pentecost. In Krakow, like in many other places all over the world, it is celebrated with a procession through the centre of the city. The Archbishop of Krakow carries the monstrance with the consecrated host to bless the city and its people. He is accompanied by many clerics, church groups, religious authorities and associations, ancient equestrian orders, personalities of public life, the monks and nuns from the countless monasteries in the city.

The celebrations start with mass in the Cathedral of Wawel hill at 9 a.m. Around 10 a.m. the procession is formed outside the cathedral and starts walking. Its route is down the Southern ramp (Droga do Zamku), then along ul. Grodzka to Rynek Glówny, around the sqare, and it ends in front of St Mary's Church. Along the routhe there are four stations where the procession stops for hymns, prayers and a sermon. All in all it takes about 3 hours. Best place to watch it is somewhere along ul. Grodzka.

Tourists: Of course you can take photos during the procession. However, be polite and respectful, and don't point your camera straight into someone's face. A good zoom is a useful tool. This is a religious event. No one will pose for your camera. The participants are not random people who dress up in costumes for some fun parade. They are serious about what they do, and they really are what they seem to be according to their outfit. Respect their faith even if you don't share it.
