Roman remains for free May 21, 2012
Coppito is still considered a village although it is now virtually a suburb of L'Aquila. It has a population of a little over 3000. The striking features of Coppito are Roman remains, an amphitheatre and a theatre.

OK, so there's no danger of confusing the amphitheatre with the Colosseum - but in mant countries it would be regarded as a major sight and there it is, just by the roadside with a lockable gate but no check on entrance, which is free.

There is a little bit more formality at the theatre - like a visitors' book ot sign - but again it is free and eminently accessible.

I had not seen the theatre before but the amphitheatre was exactly as I remembered it from before the 2009 earthquake, confirming the point I made in my recent L'Aquila review about the effects of earthquakes being closely connected with the geology of the land.
