Unexpected sight Jun 30, 2012
Comming back from a boat safari on the Olifantsrivier near Phalaborwa, the guide asked us if we wanted to see the Copper mine. Wondering what would be so special about a mine, we agreed to go. The guide drove up a steep bumpy track going up a hill and stopped on a ledge. We got out of the car, walked over to a fence on the edge of the ledge and were surprised to see a huge, 1 km wide hole below us. Everyone was in awe.

Supposedly the Copper Mine is the biggest man made hole in Africa. The open mine is no longer used, today the miners go down by elevators in an underground mine system.

So if you are on a trip around Phalaborwa, say after a safari, be sure to ask the driver to show the Copper mine.
