Copan is the famed Mayan archaeological city in western Honduras that at one time had a population of 24,000 residents. The ruins are well taken care of and are an impressive site.

The town of Copan Ruinas sits nearby and has hotels and restaurants to satisfy all the needs of visitors to the Mayan ruin site of Copan.

Guides can be hired at the site or through a travel agency in town. Self guided tour maps can be found in town or in the visitor center at the site.

Had breakfast at 8.30 at a nice restaurant called Via Via, where we will also be heading for dinner. Then headed to the Copan Ruins, where once tens of thousands of people lived. It was ruled by 14 kings over a period of 400 years, and they ended it all with a revolution before leaving to head to the cities. 400 years later the Spanish arrived but by then the jungle had overtaken it so that they didn't even notice it was there! The ruins at Copan are really awesome.  It is amazing to see what the world was like hundreds of years ago.  The ruins are unlike anything you could imagine in our times.  There are altars and monuments for rituals the likes of which we could never imagine these days.  The stone carved city is amazing.  It must have been quite a site in it's time.  I did not hire a guide but bought a little map that was for sale at the visitor center.  The map was quite help...

After escaping the zombies in Tegucigalpa, we decided to head to Copan, the site of the world famous Copan Mayan Ruins. We left the capital really early in the morning, meaning we were extremely tired, or in other words, meaning we slept passed our bus conection city. Copán in RuinsSo these are Mayan ruins. Mr Hill, you need to come to this part of the world if life allows the priviledge.
