Had breakfast at 8.30 at a nice restaurant called Via Via, where we will also be heading for dinner. Then headed to the Copan Ruins, where once tens of thousands of people lived. It was ruled by 14 kings over a period of 400 years, and they ended it all with a revolution before leaving to head to the cities. 400 years later the Spanish arrived but by then the jungle had overtaken it so that they didn't even notice it was there! It was only discovered in the last century and as a result is lar...

After escaping the zombies in Tegucigalpa, we decided to head to Copan, the site of the world famous Copan Mayan Ruins.
We left the capital really early in the morning, meaning we were extremely tired, or in other words, meaning we slept passed our bus conection city. We were an hour aways from where we needed to be, so we got in a taxi to bring us to the next town where we could get another bus to Copan. So, after an hour in taxi, we finally makde it.
Some one informed us that the next bus...

The ruins at Copan are really awesome. It is amazing to see what the world was like hundreds of years ago. The ruins are unlike anything you could imagine in our times. There are altars and monuments for rituals the likes of which we could never imagine these days. The stone carved city is amazing. It must have been quite a site in it's time. I did not hire a guide but bought a little map that was for sale at the visitor center. The map was quite help...

Copán in RuinsSo these are Mayan ruins. Mr Hill, you need to come to this part of the world if life allows the priviledge. Really, it is incredible. You know how we get all excited about little bits of upright rock which form circles on the UK's moorland? These Mayans really knew how to put stones upright. Descriptions won't do them justice; photos miss the majesty but being there, even with a gaggle of other tourists is quite something. Whilst it doesn't have the height of...

The problem with getting too comfortable in one place while
traveling is that you a) never want to move on, because travel is hard
work, and b) you have nothing to really write about but lots of time to
do it. So, I left Utila and moved across the country from one
traveler's mecca to another, but what's a guy gonna do? We connected
in San Pedro Sula, the second largest city in the country, and after
about 7 hours of winding up and down the hilly terrain, t...

Thankfully we managed to leave the hell hole of San Pedro Sula relatively early and sat on the bus for a few hours before reaching Copan Ruinas. We settled into the relatively cheap but nice Hotel Gemelos and spent the next three days lounging, eating good food, realizing we are both fat and breaking our vow of sobriety. The town of Copan is really beautiful (surrounded by green mountains, coffee plantations, cobblestone streets, colorful buildings and houses surrou...

A bit uncertain if we were a bit ruined out already, we decided to head to Copan Ruinas anyway. We´re glad we did. The ruins weren't as grand as Tikal, but there is a lot more sculptures and art work preserved here. It was a lovely morning playing on the ruins and there was hardly anyone else around. We were so excited we also splurged out in tickets to the museum. Considering it contained mostly originals of the replicas we had already seen,...

We had only 5 days but managed to see alot. I had just watched the movie Apacalypto and knew I wanted to see some Myan ruins. The trip started at San Pedro Sula airport. From there to Copan and then to Antigua.

Hello all,
I woke up this morning in pretty good shape. Seemingly the hotel's precautions reduced or eliminated the amount of insect bites I got last night, so I'm pretty happy about that. This is my last whole day in Central America, so I figured I would make the best of it. But first, I had to watch the New York hotdog eating contest on tv. Only ESPN Deportes decided not to show it, and the internet feed I found was crappy at best. Even so I was able to follow...

From Santa Rosa, we continued to Copan to check out the ruins. But to our unfortunate surprise, the visit was WAY to expensive! We weren´t expecting to have to pay so much for these ruins, so Arnaud decided to skip out on this one. Only I visited them, but at a reduced price! I passed off as a Central American and only ended up having to pay a third of the tourist price! Great! I know, I´m horrible, but hey the prices shouldn´t be ridiculous either! The ruins were fascina...
