Eating like a local Nov 06, 2008
We got led here by a local, and boy was that the best lead. He told us it is the equivalent of one of the many neighborhood food spots, but right in the French Quarter. If this is how they eat on a daily basis, I am very jealous.
It's a nice dark wooden bar, plenty of draft beers and tasty cocktails with a chalkboard menu and lots of seats stuffed in a small area...and the place needed all the seats they could get; always crowded. Service was adequate, but the food was dynamite. First time we had the gumbo and the rabbit jambalaya which we were told was as good as any fancy restaurant in the city; and boy was that good. Second time we had variations of fried shrimp, a local classic, and it couldn't have been better. Crunchy, flavorful, a bit spicy. Never had shrimp that good at home. A nice mix of regulars and tourists, and open late. Very glad we discovered it. |

House specialty drinks are Fay’s SPICY BLOODY MARY for $5.50. The spicy beans garnished in this drink were excellent. I could have had it as an appetizer. Appetizer- Seafood Gumbo for $4.50 worth every cent and as authentic as ever. Also had crab meat stuffed jalapenos for $7.95.French bread served with meals, heated in small toaster next to the bar. Marinated crab claws at $6.75 were to die for! They were large and over-flowing on the plate. Fast and friendly service with excellent ambience. A true Cajon watering hole with a rustic saloon style serving fresh local ingredients and homemade Cajon cuisine. Entrée- We shared the sampler platter as suggested by other bar flies. It had a cup of gumbo, Cajon fried chicken, shrimp Creole, red beans and rice, rabbit and sausage, JAMBALAYA all for only $13. Also had pasta Rosa which was quite spicy hosting a cayenne kick over penne. It was a good blend of spicy dish with mellow flavors that made it relatively light. Oxymoron? Try it yourself! Arrive early as seating is very limited and if you have a large crowd (4 or more) good luck; expect to wait. We noticed there was no smoke in this pub which was much appreciated. Very much like a Cajon scene as shots of jager were poured at 12:15 in the afternoon AND a couple dances close to one another. There was a water bowl for any dog patrons that might happen in. |

After much discussion and hopeless democratic vote, we decided to go to Coop's Place in the French Quarter for dinner. We drove to the YMCA to shower and change first.
When I walked into Coop's Place, I was excited what was on the menu. Rabbit as well as Smoked Duck Quesadilla sounded yummy… Habitat for Humanity |

Headed on back to condo, changed and headed over to Coop's Place (1109 Decatur Street, New Orleans http://www.coopsplace.net/ ), a local restaurant. Probably the most inexpensive yet delicious food. I had the Chicken Tchoupitoulas "A mouth-watering combination of boneless chicken breast sauteed with cream sauce and flavored with shrimp and tasso.
