Cool things to see around Anacortes May 02, 2011
I had a co-worker from India working from Seattle who asked for some recomendations for a day trip around the anacortes area. Since I grew up in this area I put together the following map with recomendations of things to stop and see. Thought I would post for travbuddy friends to leverage too! Below are the points I wrote (not in order) but instead use the map at http://www.bing.com/maps/?v=2&cp=48.4992323206177~-122.69342422485351&lvl=12&dir=0&sty=a&cid=5563CB861FC2A46E!985
Walk to end of Dock (optional)
Has a museum, dining on the water, interesting shops.
Rainbow bridge (optional stop)
Medium sized orange bridge that crosses over to an indian reservation. Indian reservations are technically a seperate "nation" managed seperatly from the US.
Commercial Ave in downtown Anacortes
The highest concentration of shops and resteraunts. Fun to walk north along this street and explore shops, etc. At the far north end on the water is where they make repairs to most of the ferrys used in washington state (and other large vessels).
Cap Sante park lookout
A drive up to the top of the rock will provide a great view of the city as well as the boats, marina, etc
A large park on the north west end of the island. you can drive counter-clockwise around for free. Also great spot to stop and walk the beach. Has a lookout spot at the top for pictures and view of nearby laconner neiborhood
Lookout at mount Erie
the highest point on the island. Great view and you can drive all the way up to it for free
Walk out to the end of rosario point
several hundred yard walk around the point. Nice open fields. Has a totem pole (a traditional art form used to capture stories carved into tall logs)
Parking area for rosario
Parking for bowman's bay (optional)
If you don't go to Rosareo go here instead for a nice beach to explore
Walk to end of Dock (optional)
Deception pass bridge
Park here and walk out onto the bridge
West Beach in deception pass state park
interesting place that you can drive all the way to. Fresh water only feet from salt water (a natural phonomonon). One of the few occurances of this in the world
Cape sante marina
public docs. Fee free to walk around on the docks and look at the different boats. pleasure bots typically on the north and middle of the marina. Fissing vessals tend to be on the south most dock
As you drive west on highway 20 look to your right and you will see an interesting marina made from odds and ends. the West breakwater is made from the wrecked hull of an old and large wooden sailing tallship. The north dock is made from a section of the old I-90 floating bridge that used to cross from Seattle to Bellevue
Visit WT preston paddwheel ship
When open you can take tours of this ship or explore on your own. you might want to check if they are open before hand. Worst case you can walk around and see from outside.
This is the main public facilities for the tribe. Most of the people live in homes on the south pard of this island.
The road to go around Washington park starts here
