Church & Convent of ourt Lady of the Pillars of Zaragoza ( the Capuchins ) Sep 21, 2013
This convent is the Templo y Convento de Nuestra Senora del Pilar Zaragoza (Las Capuchinas).

I saw this property many times and never bothered to investigate. The church is small but the attached convent is a hidden treat.

The property is a good city block in size and was designed in 1731 by a major architect, Diego de Porres. It was finished in 1736 and dedicated to the Archangel Michael.

It is unique in that the facade is made of worked stone, rather than stucco. The main cloister has low and stout columns to resist earthquake tremors.

The sleeping tower is very unique as it is circular. It was designed to with 18 cells and each has its own reading area and toilet. That feature alone is very unique.

The Capuchins nuns had a fixed and regulated, strict routine. They were governed by some draconian rules like maximum penance, maximum fasting and survival by handouts.

It seems very strange that such an order would have such beautiful surroundings. Surroundings that spell money.

In 1773 there was a major earthquake and Antigua was abandoned along with the convent. In 1943 preservation work began. In 1950 restoration work started. Now the property is used as the headquarters of the National Council for the Protection of Antigua, Guatemala.

Entry to this site is 40Q about $5.00
