Coral Sea Imperial Resort (aka Conrad Hotel) in Sharm El Sheikh May 03, 2009
If anyone is thinking of staying at The Coral Sea Imperial Resor (aka The Conrad Hotel) in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt and wants to know what it is really like this intel gives you my opinion based on the 6 times I have been there.

My first visit was in February 2006 and I was hooked! Sharm El Sheikh was the first resort I went to in Egypt (for my honeymoon in January 2004) where I stayed in another hotel which did not have a walk in beach as The Coral Sea Imperial Resort does. Although that holiday in itself was a very nice holiday - it did not compare with The Coral Sea Imperial Resort.

The Coral Sea Imperial Resort was the first hotel built in Sharm El Sheikh and places a very great importance on the needs of its guests. The staff there make you feel like part of their family. They are so happy to see you when you return. Are always polite and cannot do enough for you.

The restaurant manager Mr Nabil welcomes suggestions for different dishes that they can serve you - although I have never had a problem with the wide range of food they serve. They have themed nights in their two self serve restaurants which vary from Mexican, Spanish, Italian, French, English, American, Oriental, Indian and various others.

There is also an Italian a la carte (Il Pozzo) which you get discount on and is well worth going to. My recommendation is the 'baked mozzarella' it is to die for if you like cheese!!

Getting back to the 'normal' restaurants and breakfast - ranges from yoghurt, cereal, eggs any way you can imagine - omlettes, boiled, fried, scrambled etc., Crepes are there daily with syrups, jams and honey (which is also good for the toast), bread is made fresh daily and ranges from white to brown with or without poppy seeds and sesame seeds, in loaf or rolls and even bread sticks, pitta bread is usually served of a lunchtime. There are grilled tomatoes with cheese ontop, sausage and usually some type of potato. Also, there is the Egyptian traditional breakfast - try the pea fritter - they are really tasty! There is everything you can imagine for a continental breakfast too, cold meats, cheeses, various salad ingredients and the all important cake and pastries. You CANNOT go hungry here! There is coffee, tea, milk and various fruit juices and fresh fruit all for the taking. Look out for Fathy, Islam, Salah and Mohammed they are brilliant and make you laugh when they have to dress up on the themed nights costumes.

Lunchtime is usually either chicken, beef or fish (usually all three), with fries, boiled or roast potato - sometimes mashed potato and sauteed potatoes, filled pitta breads, always pasta of some kind, beef burgers and hot dogs are a regular for lunch. There is always a salad bar, always bread and butter, always desserts (too many to mention).

They also serve food at the pool grill between breakfast and lunch which is just next to the pool bar.

Beachfront bar called the Cabana also has its own restaurant or eating place. Amir is the man to look for here - he is a gem! The food here has to be paid for - but the burgers are huge!

The Lobby Bar is the first bar you see when you arrive at the Reception desk and is usually the first place you go to get a drink. Mahmoud is the guy to look for here - he is from Alexandria and has not long become a father to his first baby girl. He speaks very good English and if you need to know anything - see him. Bessam and Emad are also great guys, Bessam is a ladies man - you will see why when you see him.

Reception staff to look out for include Mohammed (senior reception), treat him right and you might get an upgrade!

There has been a new extension built in the last couple of years which has it's own 'heated' pool. The main pool is not heated and can be very cold in the earlier and later months of the year. Watch out for the sun! I went out in late September 2006 and it was 42 degrees.

Diving off the end of the jetty and diving trips are a MUST DO while you are there. The coral reef itself is beautiful and the different types of fish are a sight to be seen. The colours and volumes of fish I saw on every visit far surpassed what was seen in the Maldives and the Seychelles. Snorkelling is another way of seeing all of this, so if you don't dive, don't worry you can still see it and get those photos taken with the underwater camera.

Pirates Club for those of you that want the Disco and to drink after 11pm is situated next to the new extension and new pool. Bear in mind that the poor staff working in there have already been working all day too! They get paid very little and work very long hours in Egypt. A PLEASE and a THANK YOU go a long way. They especially like the ENGLISH here as we are by far the most polite.

Your room will be cleaned and towells etc replenished by your room attendant. Treat them right and you will get incense sticks burning in your room and flowers over the bed etc.

BE WARNED - if you use the mini bar in your room - you have to pay for this. Coffee and tea in your room does not have to be paid for but you need to get creamer or milk from the supermarket down Baron Boulevard.

There are a few shops for souvenirs, crisps, chocolate and postcards. A photo shop that will develop your prints before you go home. For the ladies there is a hairdresser and beauty shop where you can get your nails done.

There is a gym, a doctor and a bank all within the main lobby area.

Drink water - ask for bottled water every day in the main restaurant after 08:00.

You do not have to tip any of the staff unless you feel you want to. I usually give them mine individually in an envelope at the end of my holiday.

Use sun screen - even factor 30 will enable you to go brown the sun is so strong. Better still you won't peel!
