Journey Across America

This morning, for the second time in my life, I woke up in a field somewhere in West Virginia.  This was the last time I would be waking up in a tent.  I reflected on our journey, how in just over a month's time we traveled through 25 of the 50 states, and visited over 20 National Parks or monuments.  This was the second time in less than 10 years I was able to an adventure like this, and I would do it again in a heartbeat! There are so many wonderful places and things&nbs...

Off to New York

Well, I am all packed up and ready to go!   I'm going to take the train from New Haven to New York City, and stay at my friend Lee's apartment tonight in Manhatten.  Weather permitting, we will fly out of JFK airport tomorrow.   Today, they are having weather delays due to a nor'easter system that is passing through,  dumping a lot of wind and rain.  Hopefully it will blow over by tomorrow and everything will go smooth!   I don't know if I wil...

Leaving work, of to New York!

6:15 pm.  Saturday.   I was just punching out from work.  My boss had told me earlier in the week I could leave a little early today, because I had to catch a train to the city that was leaving Milford at 7:05.   The trouble was, I had only been scheduled til 6 pm, but a customer had kept me late!!  Milford was 40 minutes away, and I had to hurry now or I'd miss my train!! I was on my way to New York to see some old friends that I hadn't yet met.  ...

Mystic, Connecticut - Mystery And Intrigue!

Connecticut was next on my journey through the US.  Why?  because it is close to NYC and I had a free day!  So my friend Chip and I got into his car, grabbed some Dunkin' Donuts, (coffee and an egg and cheese sandwich) and hit the open road early Saturday morning.  Chip's mom is all about my travel project and suggested Mystic Seaport since she had been there a few times and really enjoyed it herself.  So Chip and I took her suggestions and hit the fr...

So I'm writing about Wolcott because nobody else will. The town is a typical suburb in central Connecticut, low crime, good schools, you know the drill. Touristy is far from an adjective I would use to describe it, but for people who live here its home. There is a disproportional number of pizza places in town, no fast food chains (besides Dunkin' Donuts), we have a tank, an "historic" district, we could have been the clock capital of the world but Bristol took that and ESPN as well, a countr...

A Call from Lee

Oct 20, 2006 - Nov 05, 2006
We left Newport after the Cliff Walk.  It was still early afternoon, but it was a 2 and a half hour drive home, and Lee and Emily still had another 2 hour train ride after that.   We said our goodbyes to Joe and Jenn, who had come up in their own car, and then we headed back west!   We dropped Lee & Emily off at the New Haven train station, and headed home to Meriden.  Not a bad little weekend jaunt, in a nice town with some good friends!  (WEL...

I took a short trip to Bristol for Thanksgiving (21-22 November 2007). It's not exactly a "travel" blog, but since it involves public transportation, I figured I'd post it here.

Hometown

So I am sitting at home, thinking about travel obviously, and I have made up my mind to see what there is to see in my state and those around it. I am going to try and get a real feel for what the area has to offer and get a better appreciation for my home state. If anyone has suggestions about where to go and what to try, let me know and I'll do my best to experience and write about it. My voyage begins today.

Drove back up to Connecticut from Huntingdon Valley, PA, with a stop in Astoria, Queens to drop off my younger sister at her place.  I hit the city at one of the worst possible times for heading to Connecticut...weekday evening, start of rush hour, and a Yankee game just ended!  Well, I could have left immediately and got to CT around 7...or I could sit around for an hour or two and still get there around 7...so I decided to get there at 7...with a delay in Queens for some coffee.&n...

fishing in the mouth of the Connecticut River

I took a ride down to Old Saybrook one Wednesday morning with my brother’s friend Judd and we spent the day fishing in the mouth of the Connecticut River.  Judd has a small fiberglass boat, which I believe he inherited from his late uncle.  The vessel is little much more than an oversized rowboat with a couple of planks across the gunwales for seats and an outboard motor on the back.  It floats, though, and that’s the important thing.  We didn’t need any luxuries. &...

Went cross country with my Dad ("WaltJake") last summer, but we ran out of time and didn't get to go everywhere we wanted to. This is a rough draft of where we want to go next time! If anybody knows of anything interesting to see near our travel path, please let me know!

Arriving at 7:45pm, my flight had landed 25 minutes ahead of schedule.  I retrieved my gate-checked bag from the cart on the tarmac, entered Tweed terminal, and asked to use the phone.  I call CT Transit to have the next G bus stop at the airport as the driver on Tuesday had suggested I should.  Answered on ring one, a recording greeted my call.  The voice on the line stated the office hours of 6:30am through 6:30pm, so I rolled my eyes and hung up the phone to go outside ...

In exactly one month, I will be on a flight to Rome from JFK. I am so excited. I've wanted to go to Italy for a long time and I'm finally going to get to do it! I've had my ticket for months and all of sudden, it's time to actually start prepping. Lists, lists and more lists!!! One thing to always remember is  Italy is not a third-world country. I can get toothpaste there if I forget. It might be interesting. Some of the best lip balm I ever had I bought in Vienna. 30 days and counting ....
