Ponder at the War Memorial Aug 23, 2017
The War Memorial at the Common Grave of the Soviet Soldiers and Officers was dedicated in 1975 at the crossing of Smetanin Street and October Street in the Old Town.

All in all 185 soldiers and officers (among them seventy unknown soldiers) were buried in this square, as well as children who became victims of bombardment during the World War II.

As you enter the memorial, you will see a memorial plaque and the sculpture of the Mourning Mother to your right. The inscription on the memorial plaque reads, People of the Earth! Kill the war! Curse the war! Keep your dream throughout your life and fill it with life. But, I beseech you, remember those who will never return!

The Mourning Mother is kneeling at the small basin filled with water that symbolizes people’s tears that were shed for the fallen soldiers.

You will see five concrete columns heading towards the skies. Those columns symbolize the barrels of guns and cannons. You can see the date 1941 when the Nazis attacked the Soviet Union. To your left there is a mound with a sculpture on its top. You can see memorial plaques with the names of 185 soldiers and officers who perished in the war battles of 1941-1943 and were buried here. The sculpture is called Winners. It represents a young infantryman with a machine-gun and a trooper whose courage and perseverance decided the outcome of the struggle against the Nazi invaders. There is the date 1945 - the year of the Great Victory.

You can see a black star at the foot of the sculpture. During Victory Day celebrations on May 9 every year, the city residents light a fire inside the memorial star.
