Only 6 more days to go! Packing has been…crazy. Thankfully I am almost done. I’ve got all of my paperwork ready to go (what a relief!). It’s strange; I don’t really feel excited. Don’t get me wrong, I want to go, but I don’t really feel like I’m doing anything out of the ordinary. I don’t feel happy, sad or even very nervous. So, one of two things is true: (1) My mind is in complete denial and it hasn’t realized that things are about to change drastically or (2) The concept …

Columbia was not the original capital of South Carolina - it used to be Charleston. But the people who lived in the mountains to the west of the state did not like the rich plantation owners in Charleston dominating the politics of the state all by themselves. Hence they would like the capital closer to their more populous part of the state. As a compromise they choose the insignificant little city of Columbia which was more or less equal distance from the two parts of the state. Du…

Interstate 26 took us back to I-95, under it, and then on to Columbia, the state capital. There are two industries in Columbia, the state government, and the University of South Carolina. We came here primarily on a college visit to enable our son to tour the university as a prospective school to attend. We found quite an interesting small city.
The Carolina campus is in the heart of town, centered on The Horseshoe. The older buldings, dating back to the university's foun…

In the morning with a yummy egg, bacon and sandwich breakfast we started driving again early. We were already past Atlanta at noon. Lots more driving with a stop at Fort Jackson for gas and a stop at Flying J's to get some more magnets for my collection. I got one for Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. Weeeeeeeeeee

It started innocently enough; I visited Juneau, Alaska in June 1993 and explored the State Capitol building. A few months later, It was Montgomery, Alabama's. In the course of time, it became a hobby. Near the end it became a bit of an obsession. Then, in August of 2006, I visited my 50th US State Capitol building in Pierre, SD. (Yeh!)
Yes, I know, I'm a geography nerd....

So a week and a day to go
before I'm on the plane to Paris. Packing is going okay. I have the
bathroom done and I'm going to attack the monstrosity that is my desk tonight I
think. My clothes are packed but there might be some last minute stuffing
and removing per usual. It's hard to fit a years worth of stuff in a
couple of bags. I'll probably take a bunch of crap I don't need and leave
stuff I do per usual as well.
School hasn't stopped either. I…
