Colonial Spanish Quarter Museum Saint Augustine Reviews
Step back in time to 1740´s Spanish St Augustine Mar 18, 2010
The Colonial Spanish Quarter Museum is situated in the middle of St George Street in the Old Town of St Augustine and is a living history museum. Costumed interpreters relive a time when St Augustine was a remote outpost of the Spanish empire. The Colonial Spanish Quarter illustrate the life of Spanish soldiers and their families in 1740.
It is an outdoor museum where you can visit with the blacksmith who made many of the metal items needed in town, the carpenter who not only repaired furniture and made small items, but also helped constructing buildings, the leatherworker who provided everything from sword belts to shoe repairs and the soldier´s wife as they go about their daily activities. A school class was visiting the blacksmith when I was there and the children were absolutely fascinated when he made a twisted iron hook in front of them.
Here you also learn how families lived, how they grew and cooked their food, and how they tended their livestock in 18th century St Augustine.
The Colonial Spanish Quarter Museum is nicely laid out. Specially nice is it that the staff is living the life of people in the 18th century. It makes everything much more real. You really feel that you are stepping back in time.
