Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park
Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park Reviews
A piece of Black History in California Nov 03, 2008
Allensworth, California was the only all Black town in California’s history. Founded, financed, and governed by Black Americans. Begun back in 1908, with the idea of self-reliance, hard work, and education they felt that African Americans could rise above the effects of slavery, attain greater social stature, and more fully realize their potential as a people. They all had the mutual desire to live in an environment where Blacks could live free from discrimination in an independent self-sufficient colony.
This 230 acre area of Allensworth was purchased by the State of California as a Historic Park in the 1970 and several building and homes have been rebuilt or restored. There is also a Visitor’s Center.
Only a small part of the original town is there today and so there is not a whole lot to see, but if you are into history and especially Black history this is a good place to visit.
