Colombo-Kandy train Reviews
Cheap and interesting way of travel Feb 12, 2011
The train is the best way of getting between Colombo and Kandy. A new highway is being built which will make the road journey less "exciting" but you get a much better chance to look around on the train.
There are a couple of departures daily (see www.railway.gov.lk) - some are "intercity express" where you can reserve seats. Express is a relative term. You can reserve first or second class tickets (numbered seats) up to 10 days in advance and you may not find any seats left on the day. Third class is a free-for-all.
First class is generally in the observation car which gives excellent views of the amazing scenery. Second class is not bad for views.
There is usually a food/tea seller on board.
Finally - the train and track are old - and the train can lurch and sway alarmingly, especially on the downhill bits from Kandy. If you get travel-sick, stay clear of the observation car!
