Colmbia Forest Reserve Vacation Guide
The Columbia River Forest Reserve protects 103,000 acres of tropical rainforest, and is one of the largest tracts of undisturbed rainforest in Central America, and one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems in Belize.
The Columbia River Forest Reserve has around 100 inches of rain each year, and the porous limestone topography acts an aquifer, storing much of the year's heavy rainfall in fissures and underground caverns. The area is riddled with major cave systems and some of the largest sink holes in the country (one is 800 feet deep and 1/4 mile wide).
Access is difficult and permits from the Forestry Department are necessary to enter the Reserve, but you can hire a guide in the village of Na Luum Ca (mother earth) or San Jose to take you on the jungle trails adjoining the Reserve. 9-day jungle adventure tours are also run, hiking from San Jose Village through the Reserve to Las Cuevas in the Cayo District.
