Colchester Travel and Tourism Guide

Colchester is England's oldest recorded town, and is in the North of Essex. The castle is one of the best preserved Norman keeps in England, although it has lost a lot of the outbuildings and ramparts, and the tours of the castle allow you to see the foundations of the Roman temple to Jupiter underneath. There is also a mediaval gate house in the town, and a zoo just outside the town limits. Colchester has two rail stations.

There are some clubs and bars, and a theatre. There is also a pedestrianised shopping area with the typical British highstreet stores and a few intersting independent shops. The town has a garrison for the Army and is home to the University of Essex.
