The reason I went to Xochimilco was one and just one: to get a ride on the small boats called "Trajineras". Xochimilco is called the floating garden, yet it isn't a garden at it isn't floating ... it would be more like a floating market. When you arrive there you should make a deal with one of the trajinera workers to move you around for a while. The ride is well worth the price because if you go during the week it is very relaxing and during the weekends it is all about party.
A ride through the canals is certainly very relaxing, especially during the morning when everything seems calm, but then you find all sorts of people in their small boats. These people will sell you all sorts of stuff, from beverages to food, and you can also pay some of them for music. There are some people with a marimba and also quite a few mariachis. Dec 18, 2006A nice lady in the market sold me some amazing clay mugs for 70 cents each. I drink tea out of them daily. --- VenustianoCarranza says: Portia, XOCHIMILCO is a neighborhood or "colonia" of Mexico City. It is connected by a series of canals that were originally dug by the Mayans for farming. Nowadays little gondolas traverse these "floating gardens." The plaza in the center of town contains a large market that sells all sorts of goods (including my clay mugs). Buenas. FS
