The city of Coimbra, one of the main Portuguese cities, that was once, in 1139 and for more then a century, the Portuguese Capital, is directly associated with its University and the academic atmosphere of its city center and student residences - commonly known as "Repúblicas".

Along with historical buildings and sites, travelers must also taste a little of that academic atmosphere.

Through nightly bars and pubs, you will certainly find some students dressed in black (the outfit that's also an academic icon), and get to listen to some poetry or music.

The local music known as "Fado de Coimbra", which is very popular among Portuguese people (also it's very different from the Lisbon Fado!), tells stories of students and "Saudade" with a melodic string Portuguese guitar.
