Affordable and yummy Japanese-style curry Aug 13, 2011
Last summer, when I was in Shanghai, I went to Coco Ichibanya Curry House with my cousin and his friend, and discovered that it's a great place that offers Japanese style curry dishes that you can design yourself. There are many locations throughout Japan and the rest of Asia, as well as several in the United States. The one I had gone to was in a shopping plaza in Shanghai.

The menu is pretty extensive, filled with different curry dishes. The curry is mostly the same style, but you get to choose your toppings, and mix and match. For example, you can get vegetarian curry, with your selection of vegetables. You can also get poultry, like chicken, or mix poultry with vegetable, such as chicken and mushroom. Besides chicken, there are the choices of certain seafood, pork, beef, etc. Next, you can choose how much rice you want, as well as how mild or spicy you want the curry. They also provide small jars of sweet and spicy pickled vegetables that go great with the curry.

I decided to go with mushroom curry with omurice. It's basically mushroom curry with rice covered in an egg omelet. Although not really in the same shape of a standard omelet you would see everywhere else, the egg really brought out the flavor of the curry, and was covered in mushroom topping as well. It was very delicious.

My cousin ordered an eggplant curry platter, and I noticed that this restaurant designs their food to be aesthetically pleasing. For regular curry dishes, they put the rice on one side of the plate, and the curry on the other, and the vegetable or meat in the middle. This gives the platter a clean and stylish look, and allows the customer to mix the dish as they'd like.

For appetizers and side dishes, we ordered corn cream soup, croquettes, and potstickers. The soup is actually sweet, not salty as you would expect soup to be. The croquettes are come in patties, with potato fillings, similar to a hashbrown. The potstickers come in a platter of six, which was perfect for a small group of people to each get a taste.

For drinks, there are the options of different types of juices, as well as soda, coffee, and tea.

The price was definitely affordable for us. The mushroom curry I ordered was about 60 yuan, and most main dishes range from 50-70 yuan. The side dishes cost between 20-35 yuan.

Overall, this was a great restaurant with many different varieties of Japanese style curry. The place gives people options on what type of toppings mixed with curry, allows them to choose how spicy they want it, and gives them several options of rice portions. Everyone can find something delicious to their taste.
