Coastal Commission San Diego Reviews
Finest City in the Country May 11, 2011
hey so i figured i would give you my perspective on San Diego. Basically there are 3 main areas that you would want to go to. Downtown encompasses the main metro area not close to beaches (several different towns). These are all good for night life, good food, and general sightseeing like museums art stores etc... The towns are hillcrest (gay area, really nice), bankers hill (more culture here, next to balboa park which is good to check out), and little italy/north&south park. All have a city vibe.
If you go about 10 miles north on the coast you hit the main beach towns (ocean, mission, and pacific beach) This is a great college area, 20-26 age range, tons of partying and bars. OB is my favorite. Very hippie feel, and you can find all forms of life there. Def go to Southbeach for shark and lobster tacos. Also Winstons is a cool place to see good music (lots of reggea and jam bands, but other stuff too). PB is a pretty crazy part of town at night. Lots of beefcakes and easy ladies. Not my scene, but pretty much everyone who moved to san diego has lived there for at least a year before they outgrew the college years. Mission is pretty similar, but even more college kids.
If you travel yet another 10 miles north on the coast, you will hit "north county" this starts in Del Mar and goes all the way up to Oceanside. (In between these two areas lies La Jolla. One of the most upscale and swanky places in the US. Everything is pricey and snooty so if your into shopping for very expensive items, this is your spot. The beaches are amazing here though, especially if you surf. Blacks beach is the best break in the area and a partially nude beach). Here's my breakdown of north county.
Del Mar - Upscale and very pricey place. Awesome to spend day's at the Race track (june-august) and go out to the many bars around 15th street at night. The beaches are amazing
Solana Beach - Not a lot here. Mainly a nice family beach town, with some nice beaches too.
Encinitas - My favorite town in all of san diego. Really cool little downtown area with all sorts of shops and restaurants. Great place to spend the day. Visit Swami's Self Realization on the ocean (best view in all of san diego!) Great time to bar hop around the towns 5-6 bars at night too.
Carlsbad - lots of military types with camp pendleton so close. Haven't spent a ton of time there other than to surf, but I have heard mixed reviews.
Oceanside - again great surf. Here it is less expensive and much more culture. Many different types of people. Large hispanic population, also lots of military, surfers, familys, pretty much have it all. This is the most run down of the north county coastal areas.
A side note, my favorite beach in San Diego is either Sunset Cliffs by ocean beach, or the rocks at la jolla. Both are amazing! Hope this helps!
