Clubbing in Hawaii Reviews

Jan 04, 2007

I’m probably a poor candidate to counsel about clubs in Hawaii (never been to a one on the islands...or anywhere in the last 20 years, lol), but I think I can help narrow your search…then you’ll just have to discover the clubs!

Your options are probably limited to three islands, and three cities in particular:

Honolulu, Oahu " clearly your best choice for clubbing, as Honolulu is the only real city on the islands…but it is truly a major city with tons of nightclubs, etc.  I’ve heard of a legendary club, Anna Bananas, somewhere downtown, but you probably can’t go wrong in Waikiki  and I have to believe there are clubs around the Aloha Tower Marketplace (parking is a drag there, but you can use the trolley…excellent for getting around town!).

There are many attractions in the city, with Pearl Harbor and the Bishop Museum at the top of the list.  You can visit Diamonhead and take a short hike to a very scenic lookout and if you like to snorkel, Hanauma Bay is unrivaled (at least it was --- last time I was there in 2005 there seemed to be less fish, but had it been my first time with nothing to compare to I would still have been amazed).  Too much else, so I’ll wrap up with a personal favorite.  The Pali Lookout, on the Pali Highway as you head for the windward side, has splendid views and is the windiest place I’ve ever been…it’s a fun, free stop!

Kailua-Kona, Hawaii " this is the tourist town on the Big Island…the island is big but the towns ain’t, although next to Honolulu this should be the best shot for nightclubs.  The coolest thing about the big Island is Volcanoes National Park, featuring active volcanoes " a fascinating and incredible place that you could probably visit in a daytrip from Kona.  I like to stay in Hilo, so we can spend all day at the national park, but it has a rather tame nightlife.  This island is as big as Connecticut and there are so many hikes, waterfalls, etc., etc. that again I’ll let you explore the options.  If you do stay in Kona, it is a haven for water sports with lots of options for snorkeling, scuba, etc.

Lahaina, Maui " this is the only other town I can recollect that might have a few clubs.  My favorite draw on this island is Haleakala National Park, a 10,000 extinct volcano that you can drive up.  Hiking & camping opportunities abound here, and it is a delight to be at the peak for sunrise or sunset.  Taking a bike ride back down is pretty cool too!  The other main draw for Maui is the beautiful art community of Hana…but there aren’t any clubs there and I wouldn’t recommend it as a daytrip.  Again, lots more here, but this is the nutshell presentation.

Each island is unique and there are so many attractions that I figured I’d abdicate to others on this site and try to help you focus if clubbing is in the mix.  Happy planning and we’ll all look forward to enjoying your blog!
