Dude, you need to define a little better what you want. Dance, techno, hip hop, retro, lounge, pub, etc.

Try L'Avenue for brunch or an evening. It is not necessarily cheap, but the food and the atmosphere is great. If you are looking for cheap move futher west along Mont Royal. There are a couple of smokey little non-descript places that have live music (usually bluesy or indi rock) from St Denis-ish to St Laurent, and clubs down both those streets.

Aletrnatively, you can just hang out around the Old Port in the evening. Don't bother going into any of the tourist trap restaurants, there is plenty of atmosphere to soak up out on the street.

The college crowd often hangs out on Crescent, between St Catherine and Sherbrooke.
